Why I Declined the Vitamin K Shot at Birth

Why I Declined the Vitamin K Shot at Birth

This is one of those controversial posts no one likes to talk about but I think it’s important. Everyone wants to believe that their doctors have their best interest when it comes to their child’s health and well-being. But, that doesn’t always mean they’ve done the research beyond their standard practice. Now that I have 2 kids, I am constantly researching and trying to make the best choices for me and my family.

I knew when I gave birth to my daughters that I was going to decline the Vitamin K shot because it’s 20,000 times more than what babies need and it can cause all sorts of problems for infections to occur. I got a shit ton of flack by the nurses when I told them I wasn’t doing the vitamin k shot; they were acting like I was committing child abuse. I finally had to tell them I would do the oral vitamin k shot with our pediatrician. They said, by the time I visit the pediatrician (because they don’t do the oral vitamin k at the hospital), she would no longer need it. Well, then I guess she is going without. Yes, I believe there may be instances where a newborn may need it if there are bleeding issues, but my daughter was completely healthy and normal with no visible signs of trauma after coming out of the birth canal unassisted. My mind may have changed IF there were issues, but there were not. I also believe the body is capable of doing what God intended it to do. The body is a powerful thing that can heal itself.

There is this brilliant, but anonymous pediatrician who states great points about the synthetic vitamin K shot. (yes, the one they give your child at birth)

Do you know what “synthetic vitamin K” enthusiasts don’t understand? The thought that babies (and all animals for that matter) have lower levels of vitamin K at birth for a beneficial, protective, reason. I’m just going to throw these “common sense-based” thoughts out there but let’s consider them: and BTW this goes for the Drops as well as the Shot.

  • First, in order to absorb vitamin K, we have to have a functioning biliary and pancreas system. Your infant’s digestive system isn’t fully developed at birth which is why we give babies breast milk (and delay solids) until they are at least 6-months-old, and why breast milk only contains a small amount of highly absorbable vitamin K. Too much vitamin K could tax the liver and cause brain damage (among other things). As baby ages and the digestive tract, mucosal lining, gut flora, and enzyme functions develop, baby can process more vitamin K. Low levels of vitamin K at birth just…makes…sense…???
  • Secondly, cord blood contains stem cells, which protect a baby against bleeding and perform all sorts of needed repairs inside an infant’s body. Here’s the kicker, in order for a baby to get this protective boost of stem cells, cord-cutting needs to be delayed and the blood needs to remain thin so stem cells can easily travel and perform their functions. Imagine that, a baby has his/her own protective mechanism to prevent bleeding and repair organs…that wasn’t discovered until after we started routinely giving infants vitamin K injections.
  • Third, a newborn might have low levels of vitamin K because its intestines are not yet colonized with bacteria needed to synthesize it and the “vitamin K cycle” isn’t fully functional in newborns. It makes sense then to bypass the gut and inject vitamin K right into the muscle right? Except baby’s kidneys aren’t fully functional either.
  • Fourth, babies are born with low levels of vitamin K compared to adults, but this level is still sufficient to prevent problems; vitamin K prophylaxis isn’t necessarily needed.
  • Finally, several clinical observations support the hypothesis that children have natural protective mechanisms that justify their low vitamin K levels at birth. I don’t know about you, but we should probably figure out why that is before we “inject now and worry about it later.

Do you know why vitamin K is pushed on parents and their children? Because pharmaceutical companies don’t like to lose money, doctors don’t like to be questioned, the American Academy of Pediatrics dare not change their recommendations.

Since 1985, the medical profession has known that oral vitamin K raises blood levels 300 – 9,000 times higher. The injectable vitamin K results in vitamin K levels 100 times thicker than adults blood.

Baby’s blood thickened with vitamin K, causes a situation where stem cells have to move through sludge, not nicely greased blood vessels full of blood which can allow stem cells easy access to anywhere. Maybe one day it will dawn on the medical profession that not only are cord blood stem cells important and useful to the newborn baby, but that stem cells need to thin blood for a reason.

Any fetus which gets being wrung out like a wet towel while traveling down a narrow drain pipe can incur damage in any part of the body, including in the brain, and needs an inbuilt fix-it. And stem cells cross the brain blood barrier. In fact, stem cells can go … anywhere!!! Amazing don’t you think. God’s design has solutions for situational problems. Three solutions, actually. The second is the fact that naturally, in the first few days, a baby’s blood clotting factors are lower than normal.

But … pediatricians consider this a … “defect” … so they want to give vitamin K which results in blood nearly 100 times thicker than an adult’s. This vitamin K injection, so they say … (like they say immediate cord clamping is safe, and normal, and delayed cord clamping is an unproven intervention) … is because the baby wasn’t designed right, and if you don’t give a vitamin K injection, the baby “could bleed to death”.

It’s not for nothing that the vitamin K syringe, sits right alongside that cord clamp and the scissors!

But there is an unanswered question:

“Why are blood clotting factors in babies low in the first few days after birth? Why has a baby got much thinner blood as a result?”

Might a logical hypothesis be, that thinner blood allows freer and quicker access to cord blood stem cells to any part of the body damaged during birth? After all, why should stem cells have to fight through a baby’s blood which is now 100 times thicker than an adult’s, courtesy of another needle?

And, the big black box warning label for the Vitamin K shot straight from the FDA website.

:

Hope this helped some of you that are searching about the Vitamin K Shot and whether or not to do it.

I did opt for delayed cord clamping but the dr. did not respect my wishes. So make sure if that is your decision, to remind your doctor.

  1. Oh wow. I had no idea about any of this! I just went with whatever the doctors said. I sometimes think that we go with what the doctors say because we expect them to know, but they doctors go by what other doctors have done for years. so everybody’s following, but who’s leading?

Wow, thanks for this info! Can you tell more about the delayed umbilical cord removal and/or give links where I read up on it more please? Sounds like the denial of the vitamin K shot and delayed cord removal go hand in hand, if I am understanding this correctly. I’m going to need to know how to instruct the doctors. Thanks so much!!

This is a helpful perspective on the matter. My kids are grown up and they might be going through all of these things with their partners some day.

  4. / 7:49 PM

I honestly do not remember if the Vitamin K shot was even a thing when I had my kids – a long time ago haha BUT I would have felt the same way you do! Look, I do not berate those who DO immunize nor do I feel immunizations are bad I just knew for MY kids they were not. Immunizations overall that is. I did have my first born immunized his first two rounds. Both times we literally almost lost him! Back then they did not know what happened or why he almost died but after that I did not go for any more rounds. Years later we found out it was the pertussis vaccination. That one element was what almost killed him because he was allergic to it. However, that was after having my second child who was 2 months premature. Due to my past experience with immunizations and my first born, there was no way I was going to have ANY given to my second. Her little system was not ready to handle them being premature is how I felt.
Now 22 years later – both of my kids have not had any and some people will dislike me for that. It’s okay. We all have to make the best choices for our children at the time as things come along. To each their own. I support your decision 100%

I feel vaccines should be a choice, not mandatory. We all are making the best choices for our children, not what the world thinks WE need to inject ourselves with. I will post more on vaccines at another time.

Thank you for sharing this information. I denied it for as long as I could but kept being pressured by the nurses and my own mother. After a week in the hospital I finally said okay to the drops method to just shut them up honestly. I regret it. My son now is showing signs of autism. My sisters daughter shows the same symptoms and she had it as well, her son did NOT get the vitamin K and he is just fine. I am truly sick of the pressure from nurses when they don’t even realize that they are causing more harm than good. I am a single mom and honestly this is exhausting. It breaks my heart to know that if I just kept standing my ground then my son would be fine. Words can not describe my regret. DO NOT GIVE YOUR KIDS THE VITAMIN K SHOT!!! It’s POISON

Vitamin k shots have been given out since 1961 and has become a standard practice at birth, so your children most likely had it if you didn’t decline.

  10. / 9:51 AM

I don’t remember this when I had my kids. But I do feel like they do a lot of things that we don’t necessarily give much thought. If anything, it is good to have the information so that you can make an educated decision.

  11. / 12:10 PM

All of my kids got the shot and it wasn’t something that I heavily researched. This chapter in my life is closed unless we adopt so I won’t have to make this tough decision. I always tell parents to do what they think is the right choice for their child.

As a person with a family member with autism, I think it’s important to look into all of the so-called standard immunizations the doctors give to pregnant women. We will probably never know the effects of such immunizations completely. But it’s always good to do your research.

You did the research and are able to choose what you want for your child. I know the nurses would argue about it but that out of routine more so. I’m sure that they have done it so long they don’t even know why and if it’s really necessary any more.

      Hi,
I am 38 weeks pregnant and me and my husband have been discussing about not giving vitK shot to our newborn. We unfortunately gave our first born but we did a lot of research this time, thanks to covid vaccines.. It basically opened our eyes, which lead us to not getting any covid vaccines and now we also don’t want to vaccinate our newborn with anything for that sort.
What I wanted to understand was, is there a way mother can increase their vitK intake for the little one to be safe if anything..
I am just curious, and yours was the first article I came across that actually talked about these issues. I found your article on the 5th page of Google search. And I am glad I didn’t give up.
It’d be really nice to hear back from you.
      Thanks.

All babies are born with very low levels of vitamin K because it doesn’t cross the placenta well. Breast milk contains only small amounts of vitamin K. That means that ALL newborns have low levels of vitamin K, which is how God intended it when we’re born. I know you probably already had your baby as I am late to reply. Hope you had a safe delivery and are enjoying your precious newborn!

So I wanted to know more and found that the quantity of the vitamin is very high compared what an adult has. It’s not necessary to have that amount.

amazing …clearly some people in a boardroom with evil intentions control this stuff and install it the same way they brainwashed the people about covid vaccines And the nurses have been brainwashed too which does not take much i guess.

I don’t have kids …one miscarriage . I am pretty sure I would have been arrested in the hospital keeping an eye on these people after birth.

Don’t know when this is from ..but I think you helped a lot of people with this . I looked up because my cousin’s grandkids got it and I thought they told them Hep shot was vitamin K ….but of course its another synthetic thing to insure kids don’t grow up healthy . Thank you so much for providing this info. Never did research before, just had my littles and kept going. Now that I’m aware I want to do lord research. The only thing that gets me is the main drawback that doctors give when you choose NOT to get the shot. Also, I saw before to help optimize vitamin k for infants is to not have any antibiotics but I was told I was GBS positive and would need antibiotics. Do you have any info on that?

    • Justyna
      / 6:05 PM

Hi there. I refused gbs testing because it’s a lie. You really dont want to have antibiotics during birth. They will go to your babies system as well. I wasn’t tested and they still were pushing antibiotics.

      • / 9:51 AM

I appreciate hearing your perspective on this situation. Ethically, you are practicing autonomy by choosing not to have the GBS swab and not getting antibiotics during your delivery. It’s important to consider the risks and benefits of any autonomous decision that you make as a patient. Medical providers attempt to practice beneficence by weighing the risks and benefits. Sometimes patient perspectives don’t agree with medical providers on whether the benefits outweigh the risks. This is where it’s very important to have an educated and informed discussion by bringing your research and questions to a provider who will listen and discuss this with you. In this particular case, GBS stands for group B strep, which is a bacterium also known as Streptococcus agalactiae. This bacterium colonizes and sometimes lives in some women’s gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts without causing complications. According to the standard of care, the swab is performed between 35 and 37 weeks of gestation to see if your body is colonized by this bacterium or not. If you are colonized, then you would receive antibiotics during your delivery. If you are not colonized, then you don’t need antibiotics during delivery. The reason this bacterium is so important is because it is the most common cause of neonatal meningitis. Meningitis is inflammation of the meningeal layers of the brain. This disease has a significant risk for death, neurologic impairment, disability, and hydrocephalus. Antibiotics are important for fighting bacterial infections such as this, and giving prophylactic antibiotics during delivery has been shown to reduce the incidence of neonatal meningitis. You’re right in saying that some antibiotics can cross the placenta, but this practice has proven to be beneficial versus risky because of the prevention of neonatal meningitis. When you refuse the GBS swab and/or if a patient doesn’t know if they are colonized, the practice is to give antibiotics regardless, just in case the patient is colonized. If you’re not colonized, then the chances of you or your infant having this complication are lower, and you wouldn’t require antibiotics during your delivery.

I am about to have my baby and have been researching this heavily! I wanted to ask if by declining the vitamin K shot, should we get baby vitamin K drops or something? Or is going without just fine in general? One of my concerns was how much aluminum is in the vitamin K shot (despite the dr + nurses saying it’s just vitamin K). If you did use vitamin K drops in lieu of the shot, what brand did you use? Thank you so much!

After requesting birth records for a different reason, i discovered that they administered vitamin k even though it clearly states no vitamin k. We had to stay another day in hospital due to jaundice. I didn’t know at the time it was caused by the shot because I didn’t know they gave it agaisnt my wishes.
His bilirubin went down slightly and were released the next day but his level went up again. I specifically remember him getting pricked in the foot over and over because his blood kept cougulating too soon to test. It all makes sense now. Also, jaundice can be linked to autism.

I just had my baby on Thursday and declined the Vitamin K shot for the second time (declined it for my son who is almost 2). I was given so much crap by the pediatrician that I left the hospital wondering if I had made the right decision.

Im so grateful for your post, it confirms what I already knew but allowed the doctor to fear munger me into questioning.

Something interesting I note from your post- the nurse was so impressed by the ease of getting the blood sample from my baby for the various tests because her blood was flowing so well. The baby before her screamed bloody murder as the nurse tried to get the required amount of blood.

Have also declined all vaccinations for both children…I live in a state of relief knowing that my children will not be harmed by them.

I had a pushy nurse give the shot several hours after birth due to my blatant and firm refusal. Her words were “no I m going to give it to him”. It was done so fast and right in front of me and I grabbed him up, he and i both crying and I said out loud “I should have protected him from that”.

It was forced on us. I know my medical records reflect my refusal because they were so uppity about it. No hep either. Can I sue? I worry they took years and health and my freedom from me. Was not a service to me. Help? Aren’t those my civil rights being taken from me?

I appreciate hearing your perspective on the vitamin K intramuscular injection that is given shortly after birth. You’re right that vitamin K levels are very low in children just after birth, and there is minimal vitamin K supplementation from breast milk. This shows that you’ve done some research and are an educated parent making a decision that you feel is best for your child. Ethically, this principle is called autonomy, and it’s very important for medical professionals to take this into consideration when treating you and your child. Respectfully, I believe that your fourth and fifth bullet points contain some inaccurate information. Historically, there have always been issues with infants having significant bleeding issues. It was discovered in the late 19th century that vitamin K plays an important role as a cofactor for the activation of clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X in the clotting cascade. Vitamin K isn’t meant to make the blood 100 times thicker, its role is to support the clotting cascade should a bleeding event be activated by the cross linking of platelets and tissue factor. The clotting cascade may very well be the natural mechanism that our bodies have to protect ourselves and our children that you’re discussing, but medical professionals believe that they are practicing beneficence by supplementing those natural mechanisms with vitamin K. Now let’s discuss the black box warning of the vitamin K injection. Hypersensitivity reactions are also known as allergic reactions. The most severe of allergic reactions is anaphylaxis, which, if not caught in time, can lead to shock and/or cardiopulmonary arrest. This can happen with anything from the food we eat, such as peanuts, to our environment around us, such as with cats, and in some cases with medications or medical treatments that are given. The issue with allergic reactions and anaphylaxis is that we generally don’t know we are allergic to something until there’s a reaction. Does this mean we should avoid everything that can be a potential allergen? Probably not, because this seems almost impossible to do. The best thing to do is avoid the allergen once you know that it causes the reaction. Everything in medicine is on a scale that weighs the risk versus the benefits. Historically, the ethical principles of the American medical field haven’t considered the risks versus benefits, but America has come a long way since then, and now the risk versus benefit is truly taken into consideration before putting you or your child in harm’s way.

With my first I followed blindly, through prayer and Gods grace she seems to be just fine. I stopped vaccinating after 15 months I finally got tired of it. Now I am due with number 2 next month and I am ready to fire nurses out of my labor and delivery room if they do not respect my wishes as the patient.
